Flashback Festival Scoop: Taking you back to the good old days, this year’s Flashback Festival features artists like Keith Sweat, Larry Graham, A Taste of Honey, and Whodini. Read on to find out a bit more about who these artists are.
Keith Sweat. You’ve probably heard of his “Twisted” and “Nobody” from the mid-90’s. Keith Sweat was born in Harlem in New York and was originally from a band in called ‘Jamilah’ in 1975. It was on 1984 when he left the group to take on a solo career and a successful one he made after that.
Larry Graham. Born 1946 in Beaumont, Texas, Larry Graham is a famous American musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer. Best known for having invented the slapping technique with the bass, he was formerly a member of the popular band Sly and the Family Stone and then went on to become the frontman of his own band Graham Central Station. He was worked alongside Prince and has made many songs, a popular one you must have heard of would be “One in A Million You.”
A Taste of Honey. Perry Kibble and Janice-Marie Johnson formed A Taste of Honey in 1971 after having their own taste of different bands separately. Hailed from Los Angeles, California, they have had to go through several drummers before finally settling on one. They even had Gregory Walker as their frontman, who left them for Santana just before releasing their famous hit “Boogie Oogie Oogie.” Another successful hit from them was a remake of “Sukiyaki” which is a totally different type of music from the more disco type “Boogie Oogie Oogie.”
Whodini. One of the early rap groups of the early 1980’s, Whodini includes Jalil Hutchins as lyricist, John Fletcher as co-vocalist who also goes by the name Ecstasy, and DJ Drew Carter as the turntable artist. Whodini belongs to the first rap groups ever to add an RnB twist to their music and therefore making way for the new jack swing movement. More famous hits include “The Haunted House of Rock”, “Magic’s Wand”(a song that has been sampled a lot of times), and “Freaks Come Out at Night”.
