More about the city of Atlanta:

Atlanta is the capital city of Georgia State and it is the most populated city in this state. The U.S. census of 2010 reported that the city’s population was 420,003. There are 5,268,860 people living in this city’s metropolitan area and the combined statistical area of the city has a population of about six million people. The region of this city has encountered increasing population growth beginning in the 1970s. Between the year 2000 and 2010, the city’s population grew by 1.6 million people.

Atlanta is regarded as being a major business city and plays a great role in the transportation industry in the southeastern part of the U.S. It is home to the world headquarters of major corporations like The Home Depot, the Coca-Cola company, AT&T Mobility, Turner Broadcasting, Delta Airlines and UPS. There are numerous Fortune 500 companies in this city and they greatly influence the city’s gross metropolitan product, which stands at 270 billion U.S. dollars.

The first inhabitants of the city of Atlanta were Cherokee and Creek Indians. There is a Creek village that is located in the area where the Peachtree Creek joins the Chattahooche River. The closest Indian settlement to the current city was Standing Peachtree. European settlers later settled in this area and on 29 December 1847, the town of Atlanta was incorporated. During the civil war, the city was a center where military supply distribution took place.

Atlanta is one of the major tourist destinations in the United States. It ranks at the seventh position of the cities that experience the largest numbers of visitors hosting more than thirty five million visitors annually. One of the main attractions in this city is the Georgia Aquarium, which has the largest number of animals when compared to other aquariums in the state. This city also hosts many art museums and an example is the High Museum of Art. This city also hosts many history museums including the Atlanta History Center, which details the history of this city and the state in general. The city also hosts the Martin Luther King Junior National Historic Site that includes the boyhood home of King and his resting place. Atlanta also hosts a civil war museum known as the Atlanta Cylorama and Civil War Museum.

The city is also home to museums designed specifically for children and they include the Fembank Science Center among others. Since the climate of this city is mild, there are many outdoor attractions and events that residents and visitors can participate in. Many of the city’s cultural events and festivals take place at Piedmont Park. These events include the Atlanta
Dogwood Festival, which is held on an annual basis, Music Midtown, Peachtree Latino and Atlanta Pride.

Atlanta also hosts the multi-genre convention known as Dragon Con, which is held at the Marriot Marquis, Hyatt Regency, Sheraton and Hilton hotels. About thirty thousand people attend this event every year. In the month of August, the city hosts a celebration of independent film, which is known as Independent Film month and it runs for the entire month.
In the month of October, Atlanta hosts the Out on Film gay festival, which attracts fans and filmmakers from all parts of the world.

The city also hosts musicals and plays in its many concert halls and theaters and an example is the Fox Theater. The other site that is very popular in this city is the Atlanta Opera, which hosts many shows. The other popular cultural events in this city include the Atlanta Jazz festival, which is regarded as being the largest free jazz festival that is held in the United States, the Inman Park Festival, the Virginia Highlands Summerfest and the Sweet Auburn SpringFest.

You cannot lack something interesting to do in Atlanta considering that it also has unique museums such as the World of Coca-Cola, which features the history of this famous soft drink. The other unique attraction in this city is the Underground Atlanta shopping complex that is located under the streets of downtown Atlanta.
